Moving your collection from AnkiWeb to LeeAB, step by step

Watch the whole thing in one narrated video

1 · Create an account

Sign up at app.leeab.net, then open the confirmation link we email you. Your sync credentials are created at the moment you confirm the address.

Signing up, confirming the email, and landing on the dashboard.

2 · Point Anki at the new address

In the desktop Anki app, open Tools → Preferences → Syncing and put our address in Self-hosted sync server:

https://sync.leeab.net/

Close Preferences when the field is filled in. Anki does not ask you to confirm anything here — the setting takes effect on the next sync.

Setting the self-hosted sync server address in Anki on the desktop.

3 · Upload your collection

Press Sync. Anki asks for an account; the username and password are the two values on your dashboard, each with a Copy button next to it. They are not your LeeAB email and password — they are credentials for the sync server itself.

The first sync uploads everything. How long it takes depends on your media, not on the number of cards. When it finishes you will see Collection sync complete. in the bottom-left corner.

The first upload, ending in “Collection sync complete.”

4 · Sync your other devices

On a phone or tablet, set the same address under Preferences → Syncing, then press Synchronize and enter the same two values. Anki asks whether to download from the server — say yes, because the device has nothing on it yet and the server now has everything.

AnkiMobile: Synchronize, the credentials, and the decks arriving.

If Anki asks you to sync again

After a first full upload Anki sometimes shows Please sync again. That is normal and not an error: the collection went up in one pass and the media follows in a second. Press Sync once more and it settles.
